More Sweet Homework…For Our Trip to Champagne

The sweetness level is defined as dosage. There are different levels of dosage as well.
Brut Nature is the driest. Minimal or no added sugar in this Champagne. There will be less than 3 grams of added sugar per liter.
Brut, probably the most popular, is low level sugar. There will be less than 12 grams of added sugar per liter.
Extra Dry is slightly sweeter but with more added sugar. These will have 12 to 17 grams of added sugar per liter.
Sec is a sweet Champagne. There will be 17 to as much as 32 grams of added sugar per liter.
Demi-Sec is a very sweet style of Champagne and often used as a dessert wine. These will have 32 to 50 grams of added sugar per liter.
Doux is the sweetest and served for dessert. With over 50 grams of added sugar per liter!
Then there is Vintage versus Non-Vintage Champagnes. Yes, there is a difference.
Non-Vintage blends grapes from multiple years. Each Champagne house has their own special style and taste. They achieve this by their special blending methods.

Vintage Champagnes are made from grapes harvested in a single year.
Prestige Cuvee is the finest Champagne from that house. Usually, these are aged longer and often made with what they determine are the best grapes. Cuvee is a term meaning the first press of the grapes…the best in quality.
